NAMI of Greater Toledo began as BOOST (Building On Our Strengths Together) in 1982. A group of mothers responded to the local mental health board's request for input with a vengeance. They quickly formed a group of family members and consumers and started support groups. They were able to secure funding from the Lucas County Mental Health Board and the United Way of Greater Toledo.
In 1992 BOOST became AMI of Greater Toledo and then of course NAMI. Currently NAMI of Greater Toledo has close to 500 members. We have been chosen the affiliate of the year for the state of Ohio 4 times.
