Spotlight on Education
Fall 2008 Family-to-Family Educational Classes kicked off with three won-derful groups, and we are proud to have touched 26 lives with education, support and empowerment through these classes. We thank the facilitators, Joan van der Bijl, Debra Remely, Diana Evans and Kimberly Simmons for contributing their time, care, and expertise. In addition, NAMI would like to thank Joel Borwnfield and Leslie Brooks for taking time to be our guest speakers and aiding in the effort to educate, support and empower our class participants.

Those of you who keep up with our website, www.namitoledo.org, read the letter to members from the Board President, Dr. Colleen Snitch. In it she describes the need for NAMI to restructure because of financial issues. I have had some people call to ask exactly what that means. We are still in the process but I want to tell you how far we have come.
NAMI of Greater Toledo is very fortunate to have funding by both the Lucas County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board and United Way of Greater Toledo. The funds from those entities are for NAMI to fulfill specific contracts with the funders. Unfortunately, we have had no increase in operations funding from either entity for over 10 years. We have attempted to fill the gap with grant monies, contributions, contracts for training and fundraisers. But we have never been able to truly keep up with the increased costs of insurance, office necessities, audits and transportation.
